Problem

Cinema-goers today face a significant challenge in accessing essential information efficiently through existing cinema apps. The current apps often lack an intuitive and user-friendly interface, making it a nightmare for users to navigate showtimes, book tickets, and access relevant details quickly.

Solution

This problem highlights the need for a cinema app that prioritizes efficient and seamless user interactions, ensuring that movie enthusiasts can swiftly access the information they need to enhance their cinematic experience. This app will empower users to effortlessly access showtimes, book tickets, and obtain other details in a fast and user-friendly manner. This solution ensures that users can make the most of their time at the movies with minimal effort and maximum enjoyment

Competitive audit

In order to gain a deeper understanding of the market and review the competitive landscape, I personally engaged with various cinema apps. This hands-on experience enabled me to discern their strengths and weaknesses, providing valuable insights into the significant challenges users encounter. User reviews were also taken into consideration to have a perspective of the challenges that the users found while engaging with the apps. Some of the most common problems were:

  • High cognitive load
  • Key information is missing
  • Overloaded UI
  • Not enough whitespace
  • Missing important features
  • It’s hard to track where you are
  • Too much publicity
  • Outdated information

User Research

For Movie project, I conducted a brief survey among a small group of individuals who regularly attend cinemas and utilize similar apps to purchase tickets, access showtimes and promotions and more. My research aims to comprehensively understand the user process of searching for movie showtimes, including the connections they establish during this process. I intend to identify recurring patterns and behaviors exhibited by users when seeking showtimes. By doing so, I aim to uncover the specific desires and needs of users as they navigate through the app. Additionally, I seek to gain insight into the challenges, problems, and frustrations users encounter while interacting with apps similar to the one I’m designing. This user-centric research will inform the development of an app that addresses these identified needs and pain points.

Sample Questions:

  • Do you own a phone?
  • How often do you go to the cinema?
  • Do you ever check for the movies’ showtime in the cinema app? Why?
  • Can you describe how you normally check for the movies’ showtimes? Why do you do it in that way?
  • What challenges or problems do you face while checking for the showtime of a movie?
  • How does that make you feel?
  • Is there anything or any way you feel these challenges could be resolved or to improve your experience while using the app?
  • Is there anything you would like to add?

Key Findings from the Survey:

  • Many users are unaware of an app for their favorite cinema, so they rely on the responsive website.
  • Google is the primary starting point for users when searching for movies’ showtimes.
  • Users are greatly annoyed by the constant barrage of advertisements.
  • Outdated information appears to be a prevalent issue in cinema websites and apps.
  • Insufficient information is another significant challenge.
  • There’s a clear demand for an efficient and user-friendly app that users would consider downloading and installing on their mobile devices.
  • Easy navigation is identified as a fundamental requirement.
